Diarrhoea, Vomiting, & Dehydration

People experiencing diarrhoea (runny poos) will often have to go toilet more often and have 3 or more runny bowel movements a day as the body tries to get rid of irritants. Normally, diarrhoea will go away on its own with some at-home care, however, it can sometimes be a symptom of a viral or bacterial infection, and if the symptoms continue or get worse you may need to visit your family GP.

Dehydration due to fluid loss can be one of the main results after experiencing diarrhoea. Symptoms of mild dehydration can include:

  • Mouth feeling dry or sticky
  • Feeling weak and tired or having no energy
  • Headaches, light-headedness, or dizziness

Vomiting (throwing up) is another way our body naturally tries to expel irritants such as bacteria or viruses. Throwing up can be caused by illnesses, pregnancy, migraines, motion sickness, or certain medications or treatments. Like diarrhoea, vomiting can lead to dehydration, and if left untreated can cause serious health issues.

Our pharmacist can help recommend products to combat symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting, and mild dehydration. You may be eligible for the funded Minor Health Conditions Service if you are:

  • Of Māori or Pacific ethnicity
  • A Community Services Card (CSC) holder
  • A child aged 14 years or younger; or
  • Part of a family/household with a child under 14 years or younger and you are both experiencing these symptoms.
